Amador County and its new home communities are located in the Sierra Nevada Foothills – the heart of the Mother Lode, just 45 miles southeast of Sacramento. Amador County is the only county in the state named after a native Californian - Jose Maria Amador, a wealthy ranchero before the gold rush, whose great ranch covered much of what is now Amador Valley near Danville.
Amador County new home residents enjoy the most the Sierra Nevada Foothills has to offer. As the gold mines shut down Amador County has quickly become a growing area for world-class wineries. Amador's Shenandoah Valley is the heartland of robust, old-vine Zinfandel. The region is also home to the El Dorado National Forest, Kirkwood Ski Resort, Plasse's Resort – Silver Lake, and Sutter Gold Mine. Amador County is also home to the dazzling Black Chasm Caverns in Volcano. Guided tours give awe-inspiring views of gorgeous stalactites, draperies and helictites, and a stunning turquoise lake.
The Amador County Office of Education and the Amador County Unified School District serves just fewer than 5,000 students with four high schools, two junior high schools and six elementary schools.
