Monterey County New Home Information
Monterey County was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. New home residents enjoy the coastline, including Big Sur, State Route 1, and the 17 Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsula which have made the county world famous.
The economy is primarily based upon tourism in the coastal regions, and agriculture in the Salinas River valley. Most of the county's new home residents live near the northern coast and Salinas valley, while the southern coast and inland mountain regions are almost un-inhabited.
Monterey County is home to famed writer and Nobel prize laureate John Steinbeck and the National Steinbeck Center and John Steinbeck Library. Additional attractions in Monterey County include: Carmel by the Sea, Cannery Row in Monterey, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Colton Hall, Larkin House, the famous 17 mile scenic drive, Pebble Beach golf resort, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Monterey State Historic Park, Mission Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, Pinnacles National Monument, Salinas River, and California Rodeo Salinas.
Monterey County new home communities send their children to the area's 25 school districts. A number of the county's school districts are diligently working to increase their Standardized Testing and Recording (STAR) in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act. Colleges in Monterey County include California State University - Monterey Bay, Hartnell College, Heald College - Salinas, Monterey Institute of International Studies, and Monterey Peninsula College.
