San Benito County New Home Information


San Benito County is located in the Coast Range Mountains, south of San Jose. Three fifths of the county's population (including new home residents) lives in Hollister. El Camino Real passes through the county and includes one of the state's missions - San Juan Bautista. The county has a total area of 1,391 square miles. Sharing a border with Santa Clara County, San Benito County lies adjacent to the San Francisco Bay area but is considered a part of the Monterey Bay area. Lying between the coastal marine layer fog and the San Joaquin Valley heat, new home residents enjoy a pleasant moderate climate - boasting 333 days of sunshine, with temperatures averaging in the high 60's.

The fertile San Benito River valley supports the new home communities with some of the most productive farmland in the state. Throughout the county you'll find fields of baby lettuce, peppers, garlic, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, celery and cauliflower. Much of the county's farmland has been certified organic. Agriculture continues to be the county's major producing industry. Benitoite, a rare blue silicate mineral is the official gem of the State of California and was discovered in San Benito County.

The geography is diversified-mountains, rolling hills, and valleys; hills are dotted with cattle, vineyards and oak trees. San Benito County's landscape lends itself to many film opportunities and the county has been in 15 films including "The Wild One" and "East of Eden".

There are 11 school districts in San Benito County with 24 schools delivering education to more than 11,400 of the community's students.
